What counts as Intellectual Property (IP)?

Tom will present a refresher on patent law with a focus on U.S. law and practice. The presentation will briefly introduce aspects of patent policy to provide a framework for understanding the law; and then discuss practical problems, issues, and questions relating to patent law that life science researchers often face.


Presenter

Dr. Tom Isenbarger

Tom Isenbarger has worked as a patent attorney for 12 years and is a senior shareholder at Casimir Jones, a life science-focused intellectual property law firm in Madison, Wisconsin. Tom has a Ph.D. in biomolecular chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School. Tom also was a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Plant Pathology and in the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, and in the Department of Molecular Biology.


How does IP compare across sectors and borders?

Dan will present on the view from industry of intellectual property developed through academic research, including how such IP is valued and assessed. Dan will also present on the current state of patentability in the agricultural space, why there are differences between the US and other jurisdictions, and why there are differences between plants and animals.

Dr. Dan Lorentzen

Dan Lorentzen is Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Genus plc and works out of the ABS Global Headquarters in Deforest, Wisconsin, and is a member of both the Iowa and Wisconsin State Bars, and is a registered Patent Attorney. Prior to joining the Company in August of 2016, Dan worked at a boutique IP law firm in Des Moines, Iowa, and earned his undergraduate degree from Augustana College, his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Iowa, and his law degree from Drake University.
